Ewan joined the Cai group as a post-doctoral research associate in March 2025 to work on genetic code expansion. He obtained his MChem from the University of Sheffield, before moving across the Peak District to undertake his PhD and a postdoc position with Dr. Sarah Lovelock in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, University of Manchester. During his time in the Lovelock group, Ewan worked on the enzymatic synthesis of therapeutic oligonucleotides and the directed evolution of DNA polymerases for activity towards non-natural nucleotides. Outside of the lab he enjoys climbing, cooking and brewing his own beer.
